There’s nothing quite like shooting at a fairground — the color, the energy, the nonstop motion. Recently, I joined a group of photographers and models for a creative night shoot at the Brazoria County Fair here in Brazoria County, Texas.
Shooting while the public was out in full force brought its own kind of creative chaos. We worked around crowds weaving through the midway, timing shots between passers-by, and constantly adjusting angles to keep backgrounds intentional. But that’s exactly what made the night fun — embracing the unpredictability and using it to tell a compelling story.
Balancing Flash and Carnival Glow
With neon rides, game booths, and colorful signage pulsing all around, the lighting was constantly changing. I used an on-camera flash with a diffuser to keep my model properly lit without losing the atmosphere behind her. At the same time, I took advantage of the white lights from nearby games and ride entrances — using the environment itself as a practical light source to shape the shot. And to make those fairground lights bloom and glow, I added a black mist filter for an extra cinematic feel.
It turned into a night of making smart decisions on the fly, leaning on the knowledge I’ve gained over the years, and using every available light source to create something visually dynamic.
Building Skills for Senior Portraits
Every shoot like this sharpens my ability to capture both personality and place — a skill I bring into all of my senior portrait sessions. Whether it’s a fairground, a favorite hangout, or a meaningful location to you, I love creating portraits that tell your story and reflect exactly who you are in this moment of your life.
If you’re a high school senior in Needville, the Brazoria County area, or the greater Houston region and want a fun, creative session — let’s design something unforgettable together.
